A Big Treat For Dance Hawaii Kai

Dance Hawaii Kai students got a big treat this past Tuesday. Some of our students couldn't make it to the Dance Hawaii 2nd Anniversary and Charity Ball at the Pacific Beach Hotel. So our Argentine Tango instructors Robert and Vanelle asked if it would be alright to perform the Argentine Tango that they had showcased at the "Ball", during the break after their first hour class. It was a good gesture and also gave our students a glimpse of how the Argentine Tango is danced. Dressed in the authentic Argentine Tango costumes Robert and Vanelle wore at the "Ball" showcase really added impact to their performance. The students were very quiet throughout the performance as they watched every movement of the dancers. It was only at the conclusion when the music stopped that the cheers and applauses were loud and clear that the students appreciated the dancers and the dancers' performance.

Robert and Vanelle will be with Dance Hawaii Kai for another 4 weeks teaching the Argentine Tango. (Photo of Robert and Vanelle by Calvin Ota). Their dance class starts at 7PM with a demo of previous dance steps and followed with a new pattern.
At 8PM, the Night Club Merengue class starts with a demo of previous dance steps by Frank and Lani and continues with a new Merengue syllabus.

Star Light, Star Bright, I Wish............

There was this couple in their 60's celebrating their 40th Anniversary. A fairy appeared and granted them one wish a piece because they had stuck together these many years and they were good Rock & Roll dancers, too. Little wifey wished for a trip around the world with her husband. Whoosh! Quick as a flash two round trip cruise ship tickets popped in her hands. Now the fairy turned to the husband and asked what he wished for. Husband said, "I wish for a female companion 30 YEARS YOUNGER." Whoosh! Quick as a flash he turned NINETY!!!! AUWE!

Speaking about the 1950's, got an e-mail from Doreen, da leeda of the 50's and 60's Oldies but Goodies WASABI Band. Dance Hawaii Kai Introduces ArgentineTango

It's a new season and Dance Hawaii Kai opened the 2011 1st Quarter at Koko Head School with the Argentine Tango this past Tuesday. We are very fortunate to have instructors Robert and Vanelle Hirayasu volunteer to teach the Argentine Tango to our students. They are excellent instructors and their method of "no rush" teaching should be appealing to the students. They covered the Basics (Tango hold, body position, Lead & Follow, and Footwork & Timing) very well and moved on to the first beginning "8 Step Pattern" of the Tango. When the music came on, everyone was dancing the Argentine Tango during the first hour.

Margie Ching is our new Dance Hawaii Kai Registrar. Margie came to us as a student during the 4th Quarter of 2010. She did a good job in registering the returning students as well as the newer ones while the class was in session. She deserves a lot of mahalos for volunteering to help Dance Hawaii Kai.

Lani and I taught the easiest to learn of all the Latin dances during the second hour...the Night Club Merengue. It's a fun dance with an enticing upbeat rhythm that causes the Meregueros to spice up the Latin movements. After absorbing the Basics of this dance and dancing them to music, the students were taught the "Underarm Combination" which in combination with the basic patterns kept them practicing the Merengue with music till it was time to close.

Our newest students Ken and Karen got so turned on to the Night Club Merengue that we had to have them dance for the class. Ken showed good leading and Karen moved with that eye-catching Latin motions very well.
