Divino Ritmo November Dance @The Cupola
SHAKE YOUR TAIL FEATHERS with Divino Ritmo @ the CUPOLA
"Twas two nights before Thanksgiving," when Lucas & Yanna will be
hosting their November dance social at the CUPOLA.

Plan on coming to "shake your tail feathers" at
Divino Ritmo's
Thanksgiving dance on Tuesday, November 26th, 6:30-9:30pm, 2nd floor of the
Honolulu Design Center @1250 Kapiolani. (The theme for the dance is based on
the Ray Charles hit featured in the movie The Blues Brothers).
The dance party is FREE and not just for dance students, but OPEN to
the PUBLIC.
DJ Lucas provides a wide variety of music styles, some perfect for a
little swing, cha cha, rumba, tango, waltz, foxtrot or other ballroom styles,
but there is also plenty of music more in tune with social dancing such as
merengue, salsa, bachata, hustle & nightclub 2-step.
"We just want it to be a fun, casual place for people to come out and
dance each month," says Lucas. Besides, pupus and drinks are available for
purchase, and a discounted happy hour price is applicable for select pupus if
you place your order by 7p.

Da Gals of Can Can Dancing -Part 2
Please scroll down for Part 1 on this blog.
There were more gals in the Can Can exhibition showcase choreographed by the late Eugene Ichinose, Founder (together with wife Harriet) and Dance Director of HBDA. As I remember them, Harriet was the cool one and Eugene was the "tough as nail" one but together they were like Ying and Yang that worked harmoniously well together.
I'm not sure if the Can Can exhibition was one of his legacy but fo' sure he was very proud of presenting the Can Can showcase and the gals who faithfully participated in them at more than one HBDA event.

Da Gals of Can Can Dancing -Part 1
I was digging into my photo archives yesterday and surprisingly came across this photo of Eugene Ichinose's Can Can Girls. (Eugene was the Founder and Dance Director of HBDA, and the choreographer of the Can Can routine). Okay that was many many moons ago but those gals are still in today's dance scene. Some of them are seen at the Palladium and they are still in grade A shape. So it must be true about the wise saying "Dancing Is Good For You. It'll Keep You Healthy and Young!" Now I don't know where I first heard that phrase or even read it. All I know about it is that my main gal keep telling me that. Anyway, I saw a couple of those Can Can gals at the Palladium last night when Lani and I were there to teach the American Cha Cha....the gal in the foreground, and Joella (the music player in my Cha Cha dance class) on the far left next to my main gal Lani. The scene in this photo was at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel Ballroom where nearly all of HBDA big events were held before the Palladium was built. These gals did really good that night and the countless hours of practice really paid off. Practice sessions were held at the old Ala Wai Clubhouse on the corner of Kapiolani Blvd. and McCully Street. It wasn't the best place for dancing feet but it was maybe the only public place to hold dances outside of the hotels. Gotta appreciate the dance floor at the Palladium 'cause the old Ala Wai Clubhouse floor was all cement and some areas were uneven. It didn't have airconditioning and the only relief during those muggy nights was the light breeze from Manoa. Auwe! Mr. Ichinose was strict during those practice hours and some members in the dance club thought he was hard core. But I saw the other side of him during all those days of practice while I was taping a training video of the gals. I found him to be a gentle person and easy to talk to. There were more gals in the Can Can routine than are pictured in the photo and they all performed in the tradition of true Can Can showmanship....the tumbling, the high kicks, the chorus line, the crisscrossing, the tush tease, etc....they were all there and performed with expertise. That was the WOW factor that brought favorable applause, whistles, excitement, and entertainment to the HBDA showcases of yesteryears. Okay, dat's all the musing for now. But keep on dancing. Dancing Is Good For You. It'll Keep You Healthy and Young!

Kauai Ballroom Dance Club 9th Anniversary Ball
Aloha Frank and Lani,
Attached is the flyer for the KDBC 9th Anniversary Ball in Kauai. Mahalo for posting it on your blog.
Tomas
KDBC Anniversary Ball Chairman
Lani and I met Ken and Ellen Kitabayashi of the Kauai Ballroom Dance Club when we first attended IBDI's Dance at Las Vegas a little over 3 years ago. The are genuine friendly people. We met them again a few months later when Lani and I attended the Kauai Ballroom Dance Club Anniversary. Long story short, Ken and Ellen came to last week's Dance Magic 808 2nd Anniversary Ball at the Pacific Beach Hotel. We talked a little about their upcoming 9th Anniversary Ball that's on tap in October. As with all anniversary balls, there's general dancing and a good number of dance exhibitions. Kauai Ballroom Dance Club holds their anniversary ball at the Marriott so you can expect a good dance floor and good eats. Anyway, if the call to go to the Garden Isle is on your agenda come October and you're looking for a place to have an evening of fun dancing, I've attached the Kauai Ballroom Dance Club 9th Anniversary Ball poster courtesy of Thomas.
