Divino Ritmo Dance @The Cupola

Just opened the following e-mail from Marie Laderta. She kinda dropped out from my radar for a while but is now getting back her dancing feet. The monthly Last Tuesday Dance at the Cupola is still on tap but let me have her give you the spill with this letter from Yanna and Lucas........

"From the Cupola of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, to the Cupola at the Honolulu
Design Center!"
A Message from: Lucas Jaime & Yanna Samkova of Divino Ritmo Dance
We just returned from the Cupola of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. We sure had our
work-out climbing the 140 meters to the top (the Cupola). The panoramic view of Rome was breath-taking and well worth it, even though Lucas was at first reluctant to exert the energy that he normally saves for dancing! Well, we are glad to be back after a nice restful vacation and ready to get back into the "swing" of things here at our very own "Cupola," located at the Honolulu Design Center on 1250 Kapiolani Blvd.

Join us this Tuesday, July 27th, from 7-10pm for our Divino Ritmo monthly gathering and dance party! Our party is open to the public! The more the merrier! There's dancing to a live DJ, a mini dance lesson, student demonstrations, AND you can go for broke purchasing ono pupus and a wide variety of drinks at the wine bar! Not to mention, bottles of wine are half price on Tuesday nights! Hope to see you all there!
Aloha,
Lucas & Yanna

USA Dance Offering International Dance Lessons

Aloha Students of Dance,
Just got this e-mail from Glenn Okazaki of USA Dance. I think he and Ann Ho are offering a great service to the dancing community. Read on excerpts........

Hi All,
Good news; everyone were quick on their feet and showed up for the Quick Step held on July 3rd , and it quickly became a dashing success. Let me quickly thank all our loyal students and new faces who showed up and quickly signed up for membership too.

Get ready for the Foxtrot on Saturday, July 24 for another great lesson, filled with technique to make dancing (leading/following) easier, proper footwork and exciting classroom work of bronze and silver figures. Technique on all our dance lessons also focuses on movement (body flight), weight distribution and being ‘grounded’.

We have approached a new idea in our class scheduling. We will try it for July and August and see how it works or does not work with the students. Our new schedule is as follows:

July 24……….Foxtrot

August 7……..Waltz

August 28……Tango

We hope to see you this Saturday, July 24th at the Palladium for the Int’l Foxtrot.
Please note that each ‘dance’ class is 1 1/2 hours for each date. In other words, on July 24, we will only be teaching the Int’l Foxtrot with a break in-between for water/practice. The cost for the class is only $5.00, member or non-member.

Registration starts at 12:30p and class begins at 1:00p. Let’s see how many foxes show up for the foxtrot.

Aloha,
Glenn Okazaki

Aloha Dancers,
Dancing In The Dark was put to sleep early this month by me but the originator of this blogsite (Joe Martel) has requested to reactivate it and ask to take over the site. Dance Hawaii Prez Maurice Morita's Message

WASABI FUNDRAISER SUCCESSFUL
Nearly 400 Dance Hawaii members, other dance clubs members, family, and friends popped in to our 1st WASABI FUNDRAISER at Aliamanu Middle School cafeteria.

Decorations chair Cora Nieto & her committee members (balloon girl Lucille Nakamoto) did an excellent job(we had a lot of good comments as to how we decorated the cafeteria); Thank you to the members who came out at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday to set up for the night's event. GOOD JOB GANG!

Sharon Nakai, Refreshments Chair, and her committee members (including her classmates) did a good job taking care of the sandwiches, chili and rice/hot dog, many desserts, etc. The members as well as our friends(Aiea Ballroom Dance Club Arthur & Joan Oda-owners of the New Aala Bakery in Liliha) came through with more refreshments that killed our worries if we would have enough refreshments (Thank you members & friends). To Rudy Luat, Pan Pacific President, for obtaining the New Aala Bakery donation.

Sisters Harriet Kihara & Marion Iwasaki for taking cafe of the registration table making sure everyone got tagged with a red wrist band, For many members who help the "two sisters," thank you very much.

Tony Alcover and his crew for taking care of the parking ( the parking lot was filled all the way to the Salt Lake Library. Good job Tony and gang.

Chris Ano and his two good lookiing sons and the rest of our members and friends for setting up and cleaning up. Terrific Job! I cannot leave out the two key guys,
Chair Melvin Nakagawa & Vice Chair James Brierly. Good Job Mel & Jim! Mel Nakagawa has to be the top ticket seller, who sold nearly 100 tickets at the WASABI shows at various sites prior to our event on June 5th and who took care of the finances as Treasurer, too. Jim Brierly was also in charge of "Ticket Distribution". To the many members who helped sell tickets to their friends and family members. Good job gang!

For our Music DJ Andy Pascua who played dance music for us during the WASABI breaks.

Of course, the main stars of this event, the members of WASABI and their leader, Doreen Nakamoto! We had a special guest singer, Nick Sierra, son of instructors Frank & Lani Sierra.

DA WINAS of the best dress looking nifty 50's & 60's - $25.00 gift certificates to Deanie Bates, President of he Aiea Ballroom Dance Club; Junie Sato; and Sharon Nakai.

Shen Yun Performing Arts Spectacular

Wow! What a performance..it was awesome! Last night (Friday), Lani and I along with 10 other members of Dance Hawaii (aka Dance Aliamanu) went to see the opening of Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Neal Blaisdel Concert Hall. Thanks to Maurice Morita, President of Dance Hawaii...he was able to get all 12 of us discount tickets in row "O" just behind the $115 section. And the seats were perfect since they were smack in the middle, giving us a clear view of the performance.

According to its publication, "Shen Yu brings together leading dancers, choreographers, vocalists, and musicians (their very own)from around the world to create an experience that will not only be beautiful and memoriable, but also enriching and uplifting." And it most certainly lived up to it as we enjoyed the non-stop 2 hour fast paced beautiful art work of classical Chinese dancing. Two EmCees guided the audience through out the entire show (20 Acts)...one spoke in Chinese while the other interpreted in English. They were lively and at times put a touch of humor in introducing the next act which brought laughter and applauses. There was a 15 minute intermission after the first hour which was a welcomed break. Truly, the performers were in top shape and very disciplined. Where can you find 22 young ladies and 18 young men wearing colorful costumes all performing in perfect unison......dancing with props, too? Each act had a story... a cultural meaning as Shen Yun puts it..."to reclaim and renew the divinely-inspired cultural heritage of humanity". The music by the live orchestra was capitivating almost like inviting the audience to be part of the show. There were vocal soloist also...a Soprano, a Tenor. and a Baritone, and an Erhu Soloist which were a good fit...strong and persuasive. The cinematography was another amazing part of the show...the way it blended with the actual performers and the act. I should stop here since I don't want to give too much away. You gotta to see Shen Yun Performing Arts spectacular yourself to believe that it is an awesome stage show to ever come to Honolulu.
After leaving the Blaisdel Concert Hall, 10 of us met at Zippy's for a late dinner and talk story. Must've been close to midnight when we broke up to go home.

Dance Hawaii Kai Last Dance & Potluck

Our Dance Hawaii Kai Foxtrot and Swing classes concluded with a potluck last night. It was billed as the last dance class and potluck for this 2nd quarter but the onolicious food was too much to resist.

It was a small turnout because many students were away on summer trips but it gave us the chance to sit on one long table and chat about other things than about dancing. Pancit, pork & chicken adobo, lumpia, mochi rice, honey glazed shrimps with walnut, smoked cornbeef, fresh fruits and more...too much that the students decided to forego the dance lessons to feast and talk story. Instead Lani gave a quick lesson on Mambo #5 Line Dance which brought a good ending to the evening.

Before closing shop, Lani and I received leis and tokens of appreciation from Maurice and Gilda. We're looking forward to the 3rd quarter dance classes in Social Waltz and Mambo starting on August 3.

Boogie To Live Band Music This Month

If the sound of Live Band Music energizes you that you want to scorch the dance floor then here's a reminder: Dance Hawaii hosting a dance this Saturday (6/5) at Aliamanu Middle School. I hear from those in the know that WASABI belts out some awesome 50's and 60's tunes. And the bonus is that Dance Hawaii DeeJay Andy Pascua will be filling in with his great danceable music when WASABI takes a break. Non-stop dancing from 6 to 11PM.
(Left click on poster to zoom in)

Then more Live Band sounds coming our way on June 18 at the Matsuri Hawaii Goodwill Dance hosted by Grace Nohara. Get your tickets early for a night of Social Dancing, Buffet Dinner, and Dance Exhibitions. Don't know yet what's on the agenda but I heard that a terrific group of dancers from Waipahu that appeals to the audience will be performing in the showcase. See poster for more info.
