Now that the holidays are over, the eating orgies slowing down, we are back in gear to start up our last Tuesday of the month social dancing at the CUPOLA!!

Yay yay we're back on the CUPOLA floor, this Tuesday, January 29th from 6:30-9:30pm. CUPOLA is on the 2nd floor of the Honolulu Design Center, 1250 Kapiolani Blvd. (Corner of Kapiolani & Piikoi).

Jumpstart the New Year with us and dance the night away to an amalgamation of specially hand-picked and very catchy tunes DJ'ed by our very own Lucas Jaime and live music maestro Jesse Gonzalez.

Our social dance is OPEN to the PUBLIC, admission is FREE, and no partners necessary! Food and beverage are available for purchase. Great wine bar! Discounted pupu menu if you order before 7pm!

Dance Magic 808 News and Freebies for Members

Hi Everyone,

There will be no ballroom dancing this weekend at the palladium. The Square Dancers are having their annual Square Dance Event on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 25 & 26 at the palladium. They have the entire ballroom.

We and some of our Dance Magic 808 members will be attending the Narcissus Coronation Ball this Saturday, Jan. 26, at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. There will be a lot of ballroom dancing at the end of the formal program. The dance floor is 36 feet by 60 feet. If you are interested in attending, you might still be able to attend but will need to contact the Chinese Chamber of Hawaii directly. If you will be attending, you might want to advise them to seat you near the dance floor. Cost is $68 and includes the Chinese sit-down dinner, formal program (coronation of the Narcissus Queen), and lots of general dancing. Dancing usually starts around 8:30 pm - 12 midnight. You can contact me if you need more information. We've been attending the ball and helping the Queen, her court, and their escorts to learn the waltz for over 10 years.

The students that attended the free quickstep class on Sunday, Jan. 20, did very well. It was a lot of fun and we hope they'll continue to practice their quickstep.

Next week Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013, we have the palladium from 9am - 1:00pm for Dance Magic 808 members to use as practice time. If you are interested in learning the Gangnam style dance, Roxanne "Roxie" Kaino will be teaching it on from 10:30am - 11 am. For those of you who will be attending the Dance Magic 808 Las Vegas Showcase on Sunday, April 28, 2013, we encourage you to learn the Gangnam style dance as we plan to have the participants perform this in Las Vegas. We are starting to collect the $55 for the dinner tickets which includes a buffet dinner, some exhibitions, and lots of general dancing. See our Las Vegas flyer on our website: www.dancemagic808.com

Invite your friends to become members of Dance Magic 808 as we plan to have some free social dances as well as free practices and classes. The 1st free social dance for 2013 is Saturday, Feb. 23 at the palladium. We have the full ballroom and admission is free for all members. Right now, only members can attend.

City & County of Honolulu's Senior Citizen's Valentine's Ball - Saturday, February 9, 2013 - 5pm - 9:30pm - palladium (full ballroom)

Cost $10 bento included. There will be dance exhibitions and lots of general dancing. Dance is open to all dancers not just the young at heart.

We (Richard & Lynn) will be performing our new quickstep routine and invite all of you to come and support us and the other dancers.

Dance Magic 808's Sweetheart Ball "Dance Extravaganza" - Saturday, February 23, 2013 - 6pm - 9:30pm - palladium (full ballroom) - Free for members.

Come & join us for an evening of great dancing. Members, join us in participating in the Dance Extravaganza. There will be 4 latin dances & 4 ballroom dances. Particpants must dance at least 2 dances. Please advise me if you would like to participate. It's open to all members. We may have to limit the number of participants but encourage all to participate, so please let us know if you would like to participate. It'll be a fun evening for everyone. Deadline to advise me (Lynn) is Friday, Feb. 1, 2013. Mahalo for your participation.

Save Friday, March 15, 2013 - IBDI's Inaugural Ball at the Pacific Beach Hotel - as soon as we get more details, we will advise you. We will be making some tables so let me (Lynn) know if you would like to attend. We will be selling tickets to this event.

Dance Magic 808's Las Vegas Showcase - Sunday, April 28, 2013 - Sam's Town Hotel & Casino - from 6pm - 11:00 pm. Cost $55.00 includes buffet dinner, some exhibitions, and lots of general dancing. Don't miss out on this exciting trip to Las Vegas. We will also be attending the college competitons on Friday & Saturday, April 26 & 27 at the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV). For Las Vegas package with Vacations Hawaii, contact Roy Hamasaki at (808) 220-9785. He still has a few more seats available. See the attached Las Vegas flyer. We are starting to collect the payment for the dance event on April 28 and we are taking names for those who would like to attend the competions. Friday night is from 5pm - 10pm ($5.00) and Saturday us from 900 am - 4pm (4pm - 6pm break for dinner), competition resumes 6pm - 10pm (cost $10 with in & out priviledges). We will advise you when we will be collecting the monies to attend the competitions.

Not About Dancing But Good To Know Stuff

Read all the way to the end. Some good info to know... Friends, Male and Female, Local or Mainland, please be sure to read the last message at the bottom. 1. Subject: Watch your purses at Costco Iwilei Ladies, I just wanted to share this very real story with you that happened recently. My co-worker had her purse stolen while at Costco Iwilei. She reported it stolen to store security who then called the police. It took the police a while to get there, probably cause it wasn't a high priority situation. She filed the report then headed straight home. By the time she got home, within two hours, her house had been cleaned out!!! All the TVs, computers, jewelry, artwork, rugs, fishing poles, stereos, etc. were taken. It was definitely a group effort as they recovered four walkie talkies that the thieves left behind. It is not uncommon for purses to be stolen but honestly most people don't think to run home to protect their homes! Most people think to just call the credit card companies and change the locks on their doors, which is what my friend did. Her husband went to Home Depot to buy new locks, instead of going straight home. My girlfriend called the credit card company and they had already filled up their gas tank. These thieves work really, really fast. So spread the word ladies so the next time this happens we can be one step ahead of them. Tell the police where you live so they can stake out your house as a precaution! 2. INCIDENT ON WAIAKAMILO-- good reminder to lock car doors Just an alert and reminder to lock your car doors. This happened in Hawaii---but it's a good reminder. Beware ..... My sister in law experienced a similar situation as the one below...she and my niece were stopped at a light, man walked thru the lanes, stopped and looked at her on the driver side. They didn't open the window and he didn't try to open the door but he reached in his pocket and pulled out a hammer, made a motion like he was going to bash the window with it. Luckily the light changed and she drove on. _______________________________ I wanted to alert you to a possibly dangerous incident which happened at about 5:30 p.m., yesterday. After driving out of the bldg parking lot, I turned right onto Waiakamilo, heading for the Nimitz traffic light. I was in the far right lane & noticed a male walking on the road, between the cars waiting to make the left turn onto Nimitz. The light was red, so traffic wasn't moving. While slowly walking down the road (mauka direction), he glanced at each vehicle he passed. Just as the light turned green, he casually turned to a car with 2 female passengers and tried to open the rear door (passenger side). Luckily, the door was locked. The car was able to drive off right away without the guy getting in. It is probably worth mentioning that the guy had a very calm, casual kind of demeanor. His physical appearance wasn't at all threatening-- was clean, casually dressed, presentable. He was carrying a duffle bag of sorts, but didn't make me think he was homeless. Anyway, just wanted to share that with you. Guess we should remember to keep our car doors locked when driving. 3. Subject: HMM! Using Credit Cards At The Gas Pumps Read this note very carefully. I did not know about the clear button, but I will be pushing the clear button before I swipe my gas or debit card and after just to be safe. People are getting really desperate due to the constantly rising gas prices. A friend just told me about something that happened to one of his coworkers. She used her credit/debit card to purchase gas at the pump (like most of us do). She received her receipt like normal. However, when she checked her statement, there were 2 $50 charges added in addition to her purchase. Upon investigation, she found out that because she did not press the 'clear' button on the pump, the employee inside the store was able to use her card to purchase? his/her own gas! To keep this from happening, after you get your receipt, you must press the 'CLEAR' button or your information will be stored until the next customer inserts their card. Be sure to tell all your friends/family so that this doesn't happen to them! (**I had never noticed the clear button but I got gas the other day and sure enough it is there. This Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013, we have the palladium (stage side) for free practice time from 10:00 am - 12:45 pm. If you are planning to attend Dance Magic 808's Las Vegas Showcase on Sunday, April 28, 2013 and would like to perform the Gangnam style dance, come to this practice. If you just want to learn it, you can also come to this practice. If you just want to practice the steps you've learned in class from Dance Magic 808 or any other organizations, you can come and practice.

Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013 from 10:30 am - 12:30 pm (stage side) free quickstep class taught by Richard & Lynn Nakamura. There will a break around 11:15 to 11:30.

Dance Magic 808 Roars Into 2013

Not quite two years old and Dance Magic 808 under the capable guidance of Prez Lynn and VP Richard Nakamura is roaring into 2013 with a bite in the Palladium schedule. That's a very good sign for this dance club and its growing membership. To all of our friends, students, and members of Dance Magic 808,

We would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy & Prosperous New Year.

We hope you get to spend the day with the ones you love and/or with your friends.

This year, Christmas came very fast for us. We were so busy working and teaching that before we knew it, it was Christmas but we haven't forgotten to share the spirit of Christmas with you and all of our friends and families.

This year we were blessed to have so many friends, students, members, and family participate in Dance Magic 808's classes and/or dance events. Our success is mainly to you. You are so caring, giving, and very supportive of Dance Magic 808.

Next year, you can expect to see Dance Magic 808 grow and do more for the community. We want to be of service to teach or help out wherever and whenever we can. We will continue to promote the other dance organizations' dance events by helping them sell tickets to their dance events, by making announcements in our classes or by emailing the announcements, and by attending their dance events whenever possible.

This Thursday, Dec. 27, 2012, at the Salt Lake District Park, we will be conducting registrations for the upcoming dance classes that will begin in January 2013. Registration will be from 5:30pm - 8:00pm. We will have some line dancing (no charge) from 6:30 pm and Roxanne Kaino will also teach the Gangnam style line dance. For those of you who will be attending Dance Magic 808's Las Vegas Showcase on Sunday, April 28, 2013, and would like to perform the Gangnam line dance, this would be a good time to learn it.

For this Thursday, Dec. 27, 2012, we were thinking of having a little holiday cheer first before doing the line dancing. Everyone is welcome to bring a holiday snack if they want to. Dance Magic 808 will provide the paper plates, forks, & napkins. It's just something simple where we can snack, register, do some line dancing, and just have fun.

We plan to have some free dancing at the palladium for our members and in the future, hopefully starting in May, we plan to have some classes at the palladium. We will keep you informed of all our activities and classes.

On Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012 at the palladium (kitchen side), from 12:15pm - 3:30pm, we'll have a daytime social dance and there is no charge for members and their guests. Paul Lee will again be our DJ. We hope you can make it. We had a lot of fun this past Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012.

Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013, Dance Magic 808's Sweetheart Ball will be held at the palladium (full ballroom) from 6pm - 9:30pm. No charge to all Dance Magic 808 2013 members. We are planning to have a Dance Extravaganza where certain couples will be dancing the latin and/or ballroom dances all at the same time. Right now we are planning on 4 latin and 4 ballroom dances with each dance being 90 seconds. To participate the couples must be a Dance Magic 808 2013 member by February 1, 2013 and there will be some dress requirements. Please contact me (Lynn) if you are interested in participating in this Dance Extravaganza. We might need to limit the number of couples so let us know right away.

We hope you'll all be able to join us at either one of our classes or at our dance event.

Dance Magic 808 Dance Program @The Palladium

 

Sun., Nov. 25, 2012 - Dance Magic 808's Dance at the Palladium (full ballroom) 6pm - 9:00pm
Members free (membership fee until Dec. 31, 2012 is $5.00) - General dancing, some line dances, short program & a snack. Members who would like to help set up, please be at the palladium at 5:30pm. At the end of the evening, we need everyone's help to clean up - .9pm - 9:30pm. Members are welcome to participate in our short dance program but will need to advise me if you will be participating by November 21. We will have members participating in the foxtrot, tango, waltz, quickstep, rumba, samba, jive, and cha cha (not in this order). Each dance will be 90 seconds and each participants will be dressed up. There will be a break between the latin and ballroom dances to allow the participants to change their outfits. It's going to be a fun evening.

Happy Birthday To The (WASABI) Turkey

Please join us this Saturday, November 24th, at JCCH's Manoa Grand Ballroom from 7:30-10:30 p.m. for a special WASABI Oldies Night, as we will also celebrate Milton's (the "Turkey") Kanreki Birthday. In Japanese tradition, men celebrate their Yakudoshi, or 42nd year (our 41st birthday bcz at birth, you are supposedly already a year old...) for good health & long life; and their Kanreki, or 60th year to begin life all over again. Please DO NOT bring any gifts! Instead, we just want to share & celebrate Milton's special day with the people we love and that are important to us. We'll have cake & treats for everyone, so please come & enjoy!

We'll need a headcount to order the food, so please email me, or call me, by Tuesday evening, Nov. 20, because we have to phone in to MGB by Wednesday, Nov. 21. Ticket price is $15 in advance, or $20 at the door. Call me at 753-7181 for an E-ticket.

Also, you're welcome to come see us Friday night, November 23rd, at the Waikiki Yacht Club, if you want to work off some of that turkey dinner from the night before. LOL! We just picked up this gig. We start at 6:45 and end at 9:45 p.m. For those of you not familiar with the Waikiki Yacht Club, it is located at the Diamond Head entrance to Ala Moana Beach Park at the Ala Moana Blvd. - Atkinson intersection. Parking is along the roadway, or in the parking lot located approx. 75-100 yds away. Come in as guests of the band.

Last call for the Divino Ritmo Grand Ball 2012, Dec. 1, 2012. It's going to be a fantastic evening that your won't want to miss out on. There will be a delicious buffet dinner, exhibitions, special spectacular pro show by USA Latin Finalists and Blackpool Rising Star Finalists, Andrei Kazlouski & Asta Sigvldadottir (their first time in Hawaii) and general dancing. Upcoming Dance Magic 808's Dance Events:

Sunday, Nov. 18, 2012 - Latin Workshop by Professional Carlos Chang (call Lynn 372-2256 or text) if interested. Must be preregistered and a Dance Magic 808 member to attend. Membership fee is $5.00. Workshop begins at 10:00am at the Ala Wai palladium. We'll be at the palladium tonight at IBDI's dance if you want to give us your registration & liability forms.

Sun., Nov. 25, 2012 - Dance Magic 808's Dance at the Palladium (full ballroom) 6pm - 9:00pm
Members free (membership fee until Dec. 31, 2012 is $5.00) - General dancing, some line dances, short program & a snack. Members who would like to help set up, please be at the palladium at 5:30pm. At the end of the evening, we need everyone's help to clean up - .9pm - 9:30pm. Members are welcome to participate in our short dance program but will need to advise me if you will be participating. We will have members participating in the foxtrot, tango, waltz, quickstep, rumba, samba, jive, and cha cha (not in this order). Each dance will be 90 seconds and each participants will be dressed up. There will be a break between the latin and ballroom dances to allow the participants to change their outfits. It's going to be a fun evening. Deadline to advise me if participating in the dance program is Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2012.
