For you guys and gals on the Central and Leeward side, if you can't make it to the IBDI 51st Anniversary Dance at the Palladium on Saturday August 18; there's still dancing goin' on at your side of the island. Take a gander at the e-mail from Doreen of WASABI..........................

WASABI will be at Mililani Rec 5 this coming Saturday, August 18, and hope some of you can make it for an early evening of dancing fun, light refreshments & munchies. MTA (Mililani Town Association) has graciously opened this event up to non-Mililani residents so our WASABI friends can join us. We started off at Rec 3, but after a couple of good turnouts, we needed more "elbow room", and our friend Mei Linn got us moved to Rec 5, which is so much bigger & easier to find (for our friends who are not familiar with finding their way around Mililani). Rec 5 is right off the H-2 Freeway...take H-2 North towards Wahiawa, take the 2nd Mililani exit after passing over Kipapa Gulch, then turn left at the traffic light (you'll see Rec 5 right across the intersection). Stay in the right lane cuz you'll be taking the next right, then another right into the driveway for Rec 5. Go all the way in, and you'll be at Rec 5. We'll start at 7:00 p.m. and end at 9:30 p.m., and Rec 5 is huge with a nice floor, so we'll have lots of room for dancing! There'll be an $8 cover charge at the door...

IBDI Celebrates 51 Years

Over a half a century in providing an avenue for people young and young-at-heart to enjoy one of the finest things in life through movement of dancing, IBDI is still going strong. Come Saturday, August 18th they will host a dance at the Palladium to celebrate their 51st Anniversary. Be sure to purchase a  presale ticket early so you don't miss out on the bento. Good place to purchase a presale ticket is at the Palladium during the IBDI dance classes this coming Monday evening. (Left click on graphic to zoom in).

Venturing with IBDI and Dance Magic 808

WOW! Monday, August 6 sure raced by quickly since Lani and I danced the Club Merengue at the Dance Magic 808 1st Anniversary Ball last month. Starting tomorrow night, we will be sharing some of the Merengue steps with IBDI at the Palladium. This will be our first venture with IBDI and I'm sure it will be a good venture and a fun one.

On Tuesday, August 21, Lani and I will be at Salt Lake District Park with the East Coast Swing (Triple Step Swing) for Dance Magic 808 to complete the last two sessions for Joshua Manzano who goes back to Las Vegas after four sessions of the Bolero. It's gonna be a tough act to follow with the EC Swing but Lani and I will try to make it fun and enjoyable.

USA Dance Mock Competition Tonight!

Aloha,

This evening is our exciting Mock Competition event. Our amateur couples will dance for you just like in a real competiton. We will start the mock competition with our Latin program, followed by our youth K-12 (Kindergarten to 12 th grade) dancers and the Standard portion of the competition. Our Latin participants will do 4 Latin dances. They are: Cha Cha Cha, Samba, Rhumba and Jive.

Our K-12 dancers will dance the Waltz and the Quick step. There will be 5 dances for our Standard participants. They are: Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Foxtrot and Quick Step.

The Mock Comp is to prepare our Amateur Competitors for their upcoming competitions such as the Hawaii Star Ball and USA Dance National Qualifying events, and then, on to the National Championships next year. Come and cheer for the participants and give them the feeling of a real competition.

If you have not purchased your ticket for the event yet, you will have to buy a ticket at the door. Tickets at the door is $10.00.

Please come early and get a good seat. See you on Saturday evening.

Dance Magic 808 July-August Dance Classes

Aloha Everyone,

Just to give you a heads up on what classes will be taught and the dates & times. 

Joshua Manzano said that on Sat., Aug. 4 at the palladim, he will be teaching the American Tango. It will be a fun class and that you'll learn a lot. It's not your average American Tango that is taught in the islands so we welcome the International dancers to take this class too.

Joshua will also be teaching on Tuesday nights starting July 31 and he will be continuing with his awesome bolero class.

Frank & Lani Sierra will teach the East Coast Swing the last 2 Tuesdays nights.

Ed Ho & Veronica Munez will be back teaching starting July 31 and they will be teaching the exciting salsa dance.

Line Dancing by Roxanne Kaino will be taught on Thursday nights and it'll be for a longer time. This session, no line dancing on Tuesdays.

Lester & Henrietta Muramoto will be teaching the beautiful International Waltz on Thursday nights.

Reminder: 

This week is Dance Magic 808's Appreciation Dance at the palladium on Friday, July 27. We hope to see everyone there.

Also this week is USA Dance's mock competition on Saturday, July 28. This is a fantastic event where you'll see lots of nice and colorful costumes and some really good dancing. Please be sure to get your tickets at Tuesday's class or send me an email or text messages if you need tickets. We had 20 tickets and have already sold 10 tickets. Creighton & Beverly Goo are our ticket sales people but they won't be in class on Tuesday so if you need tickets, please see Lynn. Richard & I will be participating in the mock competition and we hope that you'll come out and support us.

We are so thankful to have such great and caring members (which we consider as our friends) as well as having friends at the other dance clubs.

Dance Magic 808 was created so that everyone could learn to dance and have fun.

As mentioned at the "Ball", we will be offering a quickstep class this Saturday, July 14, 2012 at the Ala Wai Palladium from 12:30pm - 3:30pm. If you sign up for the quickstep class, you will be able to take the free line dancing class at 12:00pm. Classes will be offered only to members. You must be a member to take a class. Annual Membership fee is $10 and will expire on December 31, 2012. Besides having some classes at the palladium, we will be having some social dances at the palladium. By being a member of Dance Magic 808, you will be entitled to some discount as members to some of our upcoming dance events/socials.

Just to let you know that there will be no Divino Ritmo Social Dancing this coming Tuesday (6/26) at the Cupola. Divino Ritmo Social Dancing at the Cupola will resume on the last Tuesday in July.

If you're looking for more heat this summer, WASABI has got some hot stuff for the month of July. But first, go read the e-mail from Doreen............................

Before I get started, I want to let you know this is my new email address ( saracompany10@gmail.com ). I had to open a new gmail account because my hotmail account got hacked. Luckily, I had actually set up this gmail account about 7 months ago because my hotmail account was kinda junk and frustrating to use; especially with somebody like me, who's totally "lame" when it comes to the computer. Well, to make a long story short, I had imported most of my email addresses to my gmail account thinking that I would change over when I had time to figure out how to use gmail...Ok, soooooo...now I was rudely forced to actually jump into gmail, BUT, at least I have most of my email addresses!!! I am missing all of the addresses that were given to me from November 2011 to now, so if you remember whose addresses you gave me recently, can you kindly send them to me again so I can add them to my contact list?

If you emailed me anything important in the last couple of weeks that need my attention, please resend 'em to me...I lost all my emails that were in my hotmail! Boo hoo hoo! I had all my pictures that people sent me in there that are now lost...Hey, if you guys still have pictures of you & us, can you send 'em to me? I had Dr. Fixit come over to try to reopen my hotmail cuz Microsoft shutdown my account when I got hacked, but he said that the hacker has some kind of encrypted sh-t that prevented him from reopening the account, so I can't get back in...He said these hackers have nothing better to do than make people miserable. He also recommends gmail, so it's a good thing I had one, yeah?!

Que Pasa Dance Magic 808 1st Anniversary Ball?

Aloha Students of Dance and non-dancers,

        The Dance Magic 808 First Anniversary Ball is fast approaching. So what's gonna happen at the Pacific Beach Hotel on July 6th?  Well here's a small hint by Dance Magic 808 Prez Lynn and Richard Nakamura.....................

For those of you who have already purchased tickets to Dance Magic 808's 1st Anniversary Ball on July 6, 2012 at the Pacific Beach Hotel, Thank You very much. We would also like to thank everyone who has sold or is selling tickets to the ball.

We know some of you would like to come but are not able to attend due to other previous commitments like a family trip, wedding, graduation party, and etc.; we understand and we would also like to thank you for your well wishes.

We appreciate everyone's support of Dance Magic 808's 1st Anniversary Ball.

This will be an enchanting evening. We have lined up some entertainment that non-dancers and dancers will enjoy.

To start the night, we'll have a hula by Leilani Soon, and everyone will feast on a delicious buffet dinner. There will be a lot of socializing and dancing.

Don't want to give away all of our enchanting evening's program but our special guest singer will be the legendary Melveen Leed. She is an awesome entertainer and we are very fortunate to have her sing for us at the ball. We will be asking her to sing a song and will ask all dancers to come up to the floor to dance. We are also fortunate to have our niece, Kim Anderson & her boyfriend, Tony Butindaro sing a song where the audience can dance too. Kim has had several lead roles in plays at the different theaters here locally and Tony has the lead in Xanadu now playing at the Diamond Head Theater.

We will also have some exciting solo and group routines to entertain everyone. There will be a lot of time for general dancing before dinner, during the program, and after the program. Besides the ballroom dances, we will have some swing dances as well as line dances for everyone including the non-dancers to join in on.

This will be a very enchanting evening and you can dress up (it's not a requirement). The ladies can wear their gowns and crowns or tiaras and if the men want to wear their crowns that's fine too. We just want to make this a fun evening with everyone participating by either dancing or just watching everyone.

If you haven't purchased your tickets yet, it's still not too late but you'll need to get them fast as we are planning to stop selling the tickets in a week or two. Richard & I started started the ballroom dance club, "Dance Magic 808" last year and with the help of our friends and students, it has really grown in just a year's time. We will be celebrating Dance Magic 808's first year by having an "Anniversary Ball" on Friday, July 6, 2012 and would love to have you come and share in the celebration. Please let us know as soon as possible if you will be able to attend because we are expecting the tickets to be sold quickly.We plan to start working on the table assignments for Dance Magic 808's 1st Anniversary Ball next week so if you and your friends want to sit together or make a table of 10, please contact us as soon as possible. Hi Dancers!

Want to let you know that Yanna's Monday evening group exercise class for dancers will be moving to Aloha Activity Center starting next Monday, March 26th!

Aloha Activity Center is located at 725 Kapiolani Boulevard, across the street from Yanagi Sushi. Validated parking is available in the building.

Yanna's fitness class follows the Luigi technique for warm up and stretching, focusing on individual muscle groups needed for dancing. Luigi is a famous dancer in New York who overcame and conquered his paralysis from an accident by developing a set of warm-up, strengthening and stretching exercises. These exercises enabled him not only to regain movement, but to become one of America's great dancers!

Having attended Yanna's first class last Monday, I can't wait to go again! My core and muscles took a well-deserved beating, but they came to life and are being worked to move at their optimal capacity.

Come join us, whether it's for dancing or otherwise, these exercises are good for your overall fitness, physical and mental health!

The cost is $15 per person per class, or $50 per month (4 classes).

Sorry for the late notice from me (my computer contracted a virus & crashed), but hopefully, you've heard thru the guys in the band, or from some of the people in our WASABI gang about our upcoming event at the Japanese Cultural Center's (JCCH) Manoa Grand Ballroom (MGB) on Friday, March 30, 2012, from 7:30-10:30 p.m. The event is called "LIVE at the MGB" featuring WASABI. Tickets are now on sale for $15. Included in the ticket price is a pupu buffet and get a $2 parking discount voucher. Parking at JCCH is $5, so with the discount voucher, you'll park for $3, OR buy 2 or more tickets and get a $4 discount and pay only $1.

The Manoa Grand Ballroom is located on the 5th floor of JCCH, and there is an elevator in the parking garage that'll get you up to the 5th floor and right in front of the ballroom. Restrooms are clean and conveniently located right outside the ballroom, too.

Mambo Workshop with Joe Shorba

It’s Mambo time!!! Come on and learn this Cubano/Latino dance from Joe Shorba of ‘Koko Head Dance Studio.’ Joe is a rhythm dancer (American Style) and will be sharing his great moves with us on Saturday afternoon, March 31. Joe is a former Arthur Murray Dance Studio instructor in Honolulu and in 2009 opened his own dance studio here in Hawaii Kai. Registration begins at 12:30 pm and class starts at 1:00 pm. Ilima Ballroom Dance Club Anniversary

I met Diane Wong, Prez of Ilima Ballroom Dance Club, a few days ago and she mentioned about the upcoming anniversary dance this month on the 24th. I couldn't find any announcement on the Internet....the only indication was a poster tacked on the Palladium Bulletin Board. Last night's Latin Festival Dance was a BLOCKBUSTER at the Palladium....a very entertaining showcase. Anyway, March Madness continues this weekend with the Ilima Ballroom Dance Club 29th Anniversary Dance at the Palladium.

You gotta know Wendell or bettah yet you gotta imagine what this dynamo looks like so I've dug deep into my archives for this photo of him taken at last years "Bash". He's gonna get you Rock and Rolling when you meet him but fo' now go lend him an eyeball on what he wrote in the following e-mail.....


No doubt, Frank, we will again be a complete Sellout, probably earlier than last Bash where we completely soldout by Aug. 4th, 2011 and our event was not until Oct. 14th, last year! So we are continuing to emphasize, First Come, First Served for Paid Registration and First Come, First Served for Reserved/Preferred Seating.

Frank, one more VERY important point. Please make sure to add a line to your emails "stressing" to everyone that all registration forms MUST be filled out completely, Ladies Maiden Names, Full Contact Info, School Graduated From, Year Graduated etc. We keep confidential files, info is not made public, but this DATA BASE info is important in our Marketing Efforts for now and the future! I remember it was like "Yesterday" when Lani and I just got under the wire and made it to last year's Bash. It was soldout with more than 800 Senior Teenagers attending. So guys and gals, don't let the "Smoke Get In Your Eyes" and start thinking "What A Difference A Day Makes" cuz some of your friends who register early for da Bash gonna be singing "Wish You Were Here". Heart Healthy February @The Cupola

"You gotta have Heart! All you really need is Heart!" That's the tune that keeps singing in my head when I got the following e-mail from friend Marie. Peggy Lee sang it way back then but it's still a good tune today. Get the heart pumping to the Jive at the Divino Ritmo Social at the Cupola come this Tuesday. And remember that you're never too old to "Rock, Rattle, and Roll"......

Keeping fit and dancing go hand-in-hand, and you can have a blast doing both at Divino Ritmo's social dance this coming Tuesday!

Cupola is on the 2nd floor of the Honolulu Design Center, 1250 Kapiolani, corner of Kapiolani & Pensacola.

Aloha Students of Dance, If Mambo dancing is your beat, you might want to check out Lynn's e-mail that follows. Andy and Monica are choreographing a Mambo Formation dance for the Dance Magic 808 Anniversary Ball come July 6 and perhaps for the IBDI & Dance Magic 808 Las Vegas Dance in May. Practice session is tomorrow (Sunday) at the Kaneohe District Park. If you got the heartbeat for Mambo, com'on down and get hooked on Mambomania...............

To All Dancers,
If you would like to participate in the mambo group routine, there will be practice this Sunday, Feb. 26 at the Kaneohe District Park (room off to the side in the office area), 45-660 Keaahala Rd. Kaneohe, HI, from 1pm to 3pm. If you know where Windward Community College is and the Hawaii State Hospital, you'll be able to find it very easily because it's on the same street. If you need directions, please email, call or text Richard Nakamura (cell 220-8175) and he'll give you the directions. It's really easy to find.

Choreographers for the mambo are Andy & Monica Pascua. Their routine looks great and it looks like fun.

The International Waltz 1st group routine practice will be on Tuesday, March 6, from 6:45pm - 8:45pm at the Salt Lake District Park. This is the night that will be a practice night for all of our students from both the Tuesday and Thursday nights.

We (Richard & I are the choreographers) will be in the back of the room instructing the waltz group while the other members are practicing the other dances. The Mambo group might also be practicing but they will be advised tomorrow at their practice on whether they will have practice or not.

The group dances will be performed at Dance Magic 808's 1st Anniversary Ball on Friday, July 6, 2012 at the Pacific Beach Hotel. If the dancers are ready and the routines have been completed before our Las Vegas trip, the dances can also be performed in Las Vegas, on Saturday, May 19, 2012.

Requirements to be part of the Dance Magic 808 group routines:
1. Member of Dance Magic 808 ($10 annual membership fee)
2. Active student of Dance Magic 808 taking at least one dance for the entire session (session is normally 6 - 7 weeks)
(ie: Line Dancing for session that runs 6 weeks, cost $6, must pay for entire session whether you attend all classes or not/cost breaks down to $1 per class x 6 weeks)
3. Must be able to attend all or most of the practices (very important because it's a formation dance)
4. Choreographers' approval

If you have the desire and are serious of doing your best in these routines, you won't be disappointed. You'll learn a lot and you'll be performing a really nice exhibition for your fellow dancers, families, and friends.

Please let us know if you would like to join our routines. We already have some dancers but we can accept a few more.

Hawaii Gardenia Circle Latin Festival

Things looking up for the month of March at the Palladium. Friend Gayle and the Hawaii Gardenia Circle got the 5th Latin Festival cooking at the Palladium on March 17th. Not sure if there's gonna be any Latin Exhibition Showcase but there's bound to be a whole bunch of Hot Latin Dancers.
